A couple of weeks ago I went out to the aviary to get Billie. We had been leaving her out there with Junior and Bandit in the day time. First of all Billie didn’t want to come in. She told me this by smothering my face in kisses and walking away.
I stopped and chatted to Bandit for a while and we had a little sing a long. This consists of me coming up with a rhyming ditty about Bandit and Bandit joining in by squarking as loudly as he can and flapping his wings whilst jumping up and down. I assume he is dancing.
There was a kerplunker on my shoulder (only word I can find that perfectly describes a bird jumping on with a thud – rather than landing gracously). It was getting a bit cold so I said “Ok Billie – let’s go” and took her outside and into the house rather quickly to get out of the cold.
Once inside – Billie flew straight off me and through the house to the top of the book shelf. This was a bit unusual and made me think that it was good that her wings were not clipped. I sat down to catch up on some articles and up on the bookshelf – Billie started talking. Hmm – they were not the sentences that Billie normally used. I climbed up on the step ladder to tell her what a clever girl she was. Uh Oh – Billie is a mature female with pinkish eyes. Staring back at me were beautiful big brown eyes and a rather happy galah!
Yep – Junior had just smuggled herself back inside! It didn’t take her long realize that I had recognized her and she stayed far enough away from me that I understood she didn’t want to go back outside. I went and brought Billie inside and settled her in her favourite spot and went to get Bandit. Bandit took a very long time and had to sit in the dark for ages before he was calm enough for me to catch him. Once he was inside it was a different story altogether.
Bandit and Junior had seemed quite happy outside but once they were inside they went crazy flying around the house. They bully the other birds a bit and need to be watched but are very playful.
So at the moment we have 4 Galahs, 1 Corella, 1 Rainbow Lorikeet and 4 Cockatiels all flying free range in the lounge and computer area. OK – Angel isn’t flying yet but she sure is free range! We are back to spending a couple of hours a day cleaning up after them and life is chaotic.
On the other hand – I am constantly being amused and amazed by these crazy critters. They have so many different rules for each other I don’t know how they even manage to keep up. There is a firmly established hierarchy for different areas of the house and even for me!
Remember playing chasey as a kid and there was a safe spot to run to for a ‘truce’ – I am that safe spot and they all make use of it.
All the birds are taming up nicely and Bandit is much more friendly with me. He is also learning some much needed words such as – No and Gentle. The next one might be ‘Drop It’ as he has taken to flying over my head and grabbing my glasses to take away with him. That’s my clever boy!
They are also learning more words and I have taught Junior to say “Scratch” and “Good Girl”.She is a bit of a nipper and we can’t quite work out why – but she is learning that “Biting is Bad” in a deep voice with no extra attention for doing so.
